About Kuona Trust:

Kuona Trust is a not for profit organization that was founded 15 years ago with the aim of generating, presenting and promoting innovative contemporary visual arts practice in Kenya. Our artists’ studios, library, programme of exhibitions, artists’ talks, training and mentoring, education and international exchange, provide opportunities for artists to develop new and experimental contemporary artwork within a context of current practice. Our l art centre that is open to the public 7 days a week; It is an efficient, professional, transparent, accountable and experienced organisation that has supported the extended artistic community in Kenya and abroad by providing 15 years of skills, networking and service to a loyal following of artists and the public through its central hub of creativity, education and inspiration.

Compared to dance, drama and music, visual art is a less well known form of cultural expression in Kenya and since 1995, we have played a major role in raising the profile of visual arts. Our efforts have resulted in an increasing presence and interest in the visual arts, with more exhibition space for artists, a group of established artists, emerging artists and a definite increase in public awareness and enjoyment of art; but there is still a long way to go before art is valued and visible in Kenya, apart from a few galleries and public buildings showing art, only Kuona Trust provides all the other facilities visual artists need for development.

Over the past 15 years nearly all Kenyan and many other African artists have benefited from Kuona Trust with at least 1,000 artists participating in Kuona programmes, either working at the studios, participating in the workshops, residencies, exhibitions, art training, public and outreach projects. Kuona has provided support and opportunities for artists to excel and encouraged the larger Kenyan public to become interested in the visual arts.

Kuona sets out to challenge artists and audiences with new programmes and workshops using different models or themes to encourage experimentation and ideas. Kuona trains artists to teach others and educates a wide variety of audiences from the disadvantaged to the more privileged through art projects, art talks, films and discussions. Kuona has an exhibition space devoted to experimental exhibitions to help develop artistic concepts, artists’ practices and a language around Kenyan art. Kuona’s art centre provides a hub for bringing public and artists together, a place for artists to gather and learn from each other.
